Although it is native to Australia, foxtail palm is well-adapted to thrive in warm-winter climates such as South Florida. This attribute has made this palm a popular option for tropical landscaping. Due to its rapid growth, you can enjoy a large tree in just a few years.

Foxtail palm is frequently planted singly, although it looks best when planted in groups of three or more. This creates the appearance of a tropical oasis and is the ideal location for a garden bench or arbor planted with lush and vibrant tropical plants.

Foxtail Palm Maintenance Essentials

  • Foxtail palms should be planted in a location that receives at least six hours of direct sunlight every day. They tolerate partial shade but grow more slowly than they do in full sun and are more susceptible to fungal infections.

  • Foxtail palm trees prefer well-drained sandy soil and are not suitable for locations with prolonged periods of standing water. Therefore, plant them on elevated mounds in regions with abundant clay or where water may pool. Once established, the trees are drought-resistant and typically do not need to be watered to survive. During a drought, though, they will grow the fastest and look the finest if additional water is provided.

  • These palms are relatively tolerant of salt, making them an excellent choice for coastal locations. Applying a fertilizer made for palms in the spring can keep the fronds looking rich and dark green. Follow the application rates stated in the product box.

  • At planting time, spreading a 3- to 4-inch-thick layer of mulch over the soil reduces weed competition and protects tree trunks from the lawn mower and string trimmer damage.

  • Foxtail palms are difficult to cultivate indoors if you do not have a conservatory or greenhouse, as they require a great deal of light. However, they form attractive examples if they are kept alive with sufficient light.
